How To Comfort The Bereaved

One of the most difficult aspects of ministry is taking a funeral. Though never an enjoyable experience it is one of the most rewarding. Those who have lost a loved-one are almost always most receptive to words of comfort and hope at these difficult moments in our lives. Paul Beasley-Murray, in his book There is Hope: Preaching at Funerals has shown both wisdom and compassion in his approach to this challenging aspect of Christian ministry. The theme at the heart of this module (based with permission on Paul’s book) is that there is hope at what would otherwise be a dark hour for family and friends left behind. Funeral services are for the bereaved and not the departed. They are an opportunity to strengthen and uplift those who are fragile and downhearted from a sense of profound separation from those they love. In this module you will have a taster of what Paul Beasley-Murray shares in his admirable book, which is full of guidance for those of us charged with the task and privilege of comforting the bereaved with the message of hope that is found in the resurrection of Jesus.
